Chicas poderosas lanza NICAR LatAM

I just sent this note to the NICAR list:
Hi all,
Did you know that NICAR-L is 21 years old? Over that time you’ve posted more than 78,000 messages. You’ve answered questions at 2 a.m. and on holiday weekends. Today we’re hoping to spread the NICAR-L love with a Spanish-only version of this list. NICAR-ESP-L is live today. If you’re a Spanish-speaking NICARian we’d love it if you’d join NICAR-ESP-L to spread the reach of this amazing community. Please go here to join and let me know if you have any questions.
Cheers,
Jaimi

PS: Special thanks to Mariana Santos, Chicas Poderosas, Scott Klein, Francisco Vara-Orta and may other volunteers for making this happen.

Hi Mariana!
I hope this finds you well. I wanted to fill you in on what we’re up to and get your thoughts on the Spanish NICAR listserv. Here are the updates:
1) We’re planning on calling the list either NICAR.ESP-L or NICAR+ESP-L (We’re still working on that part 🙂 and we hope to make it live this week. We already have about 30 people (including you) signed up for the list to start. We’re planning on posting an announcement on our blog in Spanish with the English translation below it. We’ll also post that announcement to the list for the first message. I plan on sending a note to NICAR-L to announce as well. I’ve pasted a draft of both the announcement and my email to the NICAR list below. I was hoping you could take a look at the announcement and see if you think it could work. We don’t want anyone to feel like we’re trying to replace the amazing work already being done in Latin American (and elsewhere) to support data journalism. I’d love to hear any thoughts or suggested edits you have. We’ll have one of our students translate the message once we have a final version.

Mark is going to the Global Investigative Journalism Conference in Norway this week and will announce it there.

2) Our staff has been working on building a landing page with resources in Spanish. A number of members have already sent things in and we plan on having some of our most popular tipsheets from NICAR conferences translated into Spanish. We’re planning on letting the list grow and gain momentum then we’ll launch this page on the list.

3) We’re on board to start talking about a conference in Latin America. Once we get the list launched and see how it goes, I think it’d be great if you, Scott, Mark and I could get on a call to start the planning.

I think that’s it – it’s all good news! We’re so thrilled that you’re helping with this and that you and Scott approached us with this initiative earlier this year. I’m so excited that it’s starting to come together. Please let me know what you think about the announcements below.
Thanks so much!
Jaimi

BLOG/ANNOUNCEMENT
Whether the middle of the night or a holiday weekend, NICAR-L’s more than 2,300 members are willing to answer questions on everything from Excel basics to advanced mapping and coding techniques. Since 1994, more than 78,000 messages have been posted to Investigative Reporters and Editors’ email list dedicated to data-driven journalism. We hope that this helpful spirit carries on with NICARESP-L, our Spanish version of this list, live today.

Just like the original, NICARESP-L will serve as a forum for the discussion of subjects related to data-driven journalism. It will also act as a posting board for new developments at IRE and NICAR. And just like NICAR-L, this list will be open to everyone, both IRE members and nonmembers.
