Over a hundred chicas of Latin America gathered in Mexico City in a Mediathon to develop digital journalism projects on gender issues. It was beautiful! A vibrant community of women showed the potential of collaborative work, presenting projects that highlighted some of the challenges to achieving gender equality in the continent. Gênero & Número (Gender and Number) magazine attended the event and now open a call for proposals to continue the work started in México, in partnership with Chicas Poderosas and Agência Pública.

We will select two women from Latin America who participated in #mediatonpower to receive mentorship and develop a data journalism project on gender that will be published in the November issue of our magazine. The fellows will have travel expenses and lodging covered during the fellowship and will make a two-week immersion – from 9 to 23 November – in Gênero & Número newsroom, which is inside the space of Agência Pública in Rio de Janeiro.

During this period, they will receive data journalism training and will have the support of our team to build a digital narrative addressing gender concerns on the continent, to be published in the next issue of our online magazine.

Registration is open until next Tuesday, Nov. 1st, and can be made in this form. Journalists, developers, designers and multimedia professionals from Chicas Poderosas network in Latin America can apply for this fellowship. We will announce the result on Friday, Nov. 4th.

Gênero e Número is an independent digital magazine that seeks to qualify the debate about gender inequalities based on data-driven narratives. It is run by a multidisciplinary team that includes programmers, designers and journalists specialized in multimedia production and data analysis, and supported by Agência Pública and Ford Foundation.

Agência Pública is a women-led investigative journalism agency founded in 2011 in Brazil that run independent investigations.

Chicas Poderosas is a project led by the multimedia designer Mariana Santos that seeks to develop technological and storytelling skills among Latin American girls and foster a learning network among them.
