Chicas Poderosas is finally being launched in Brazil. The “Paralympic Hackathon by Chicas Poderosas” will take place in Rio de Janeiro on August 28 and 29.
As part of the celebrations for the Paralympic International Day, Chicas joins Abraça (Sustainability, Accessibility and Legacy Program for Rio 2016 Games) for a day of data hacking. The goal is to develop interactive journalistic content and data visualizations around the theme.
Launched in 2013 by the Portuguese designer Mariana Santos, Chicas Poderosas encourages diversity in journalism and minimizes the gender gap in newsrooms. Chicas fosters a community of trained women that have all the skills needed to become leaders in Latin America (and beyond!).
Chicas events have already taken place in eight countries in America, gathering professionals from Brazil, Argentina, El Salvador, México, Colombia, Chile, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Guatemala. We also have had mentors from top-notch organizations, such as Pro Publica, Google, Stanford University, International Center for Journalists, Singularity University, as well as The New York Times and The Guardian.
Now, Chicas launches in Brazil with the objective of bringing more journalists, designers, programmers, and developers from Brazil into this international network. During this two-day event, we will host debates about data journalism and visual storytelling. Then, participants will start to work in groups on a hands-on project.
We can’t wait to have you here!
